Drawing & Making Music

December 21, 2009 :: Category - Designs, Messy Closet, Music, Uncategorized

I decided to make an infographic about the process of drawing & making music, and how they can overlap.. It’s weird because when I draw, I tend to look at a list of principles that I thought were completely different from when I make music.. but looking at it carefully: they have more in common than you’d think!

This is just a general idea.. of course there are different styles that would use different principles.

On the side note:
Interestingly.. I’ve never really seen beats as holding music together until after I started incorporating it into my music. So I guess the opposite applies, to create airy sounding music: remove beats or use different samples that allow the music to float!

Exploring Toronto Again

Back to exploring Toronto again.. there are so many things I haven’t noticed during the summer roaming: new places to explore in familiar areas.

Update: Angela Davis Poster

December 18, 2009 :: Category - Designs, Sketches/Drawings

I was contacted by the U of T Student Union for a poster design commission. It’s for Angela Davis’s lecture, which is coming up in February :)

I might go through quite a few drafts before reading the final product:

Incorporating a mix media rendered portrait of Angela Davis:

And that’s about it so far..

December 8 - an update

December 08, 2009 :: Category - Designs, Personal/Updates, Sketches/Drawings

I’m starting a new project: Visual Pile (there’s only an uncoded mock-up of the site at the moment). It will essentially revolve about visual communication.. in an interesting way - I have yet to plan it all out.

Also, random goodness:

So, it’s the end of the semester and I can’t believe I survived illustrative drawing. It was one of those classes that basically tore my self esteem into pieces. A huge chunk of the classmates were highly skilled in realism… whereas I was that student that couldn’t really draw. I remember going to the first few classes with Marta and we basically left EVERY class feeling like crap (for lack of a better word), doubting ourselves and our skills. Now that it’s over, I feel that we’ve all really improved with our drawing skills and most importantly: leaving with a clearer direction into knowing what needs to be improved :) Next step: illustrative drawing & painting.. never really painted full pieces before.. this will be the hardest challenge yet.

Big Pink Concert

December 01, 2009 :: Category - Designs, Music, Personal/Updates, Uncategorized

I was at the Big Pink concert last night.. and I must say it was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Velvet, Dominos and Too Young to Love gave me a high. They’re one of my biggest inspiration for music making asides from Yann Tiersen and the Velvet Underground.

Lastly…

It’s almost winter break… which means: looking back at the semester, refining and continuing the journey to seeking new inspirations.

Last Night

I just made a draft/rough version of how the infograph would be animated: it’s a bit too basic and indeed tedious without proper motion graphic techniques.

…and another video:

CD Cover Design + More

November 26, 2009 :: Category - Designs

I had another CD cover design project for illustration 1… so basically did The Film School’s album Hideout. We’re suppose to have the design style correlate with the music genre.

I bought fake trees, enlarged one of my polaroid photos and printed it out (for the background) and drew the other elements.

On a random note:
One summer day, I finished doing laundry and noticed these three t-shirts laying side-by-side/on top of each other and thought to myself, “hmm… this makes a pretty nice color scheme! :)”

Ah and lastly, attached on a box of cookies that my parents brought over today:

Mmmm.. Mitosis

Walker’s Guide to Toronto
I designed another infograph that could be useful to those who use walking as their main mode of transportation :)

This visual graphic helps people approximate the distance and time it takes to walk from 1 major intersection to the next.
