Gouache Wash

January 18, 2010 :: Category - Uncategorized, Zines

For my media course, we’re experimenting with many techniques and what not. This week’s is gouache washing with the theme: Love.

It’s fairly simple to accomplish:
1) Draw out your illustration.
2) Paint the negatives with white gouache
3) Coat everything in india ink
4) Wash it off with running water

Major Update!

January 14, 2010 :: Category - Personal/Updates, Thoughts

Major Update:
I haven’t stopped drawing daily! Time has been flying so fast with school and random events… But I’m getting back on track ~

Art show!
Andrea is organizing an art show at the Hotshot gallery (in Kensington Market) for the month of March. A couple of us illustration students will be there with new works ;) I’ll post up details later when things have been finalized.

Illustration 2:
I have Jacqui Oakley for my core course this semester. I’m super excited because I love her style and the assignments sound pretty interesting. I have a feeling I’ll be putting a lot of energy trying to “perfect” the projects for this semester :)

For illustrative drawing & painting, I have Bob Berger again. I have to admit I slacked off a lot last semester, so I’m getting back on track this semester. We have 6 hours of drawing weekly. For the “lab” portion of the class, we have to keep a sketchbook, filled with observational drawings from pure line work only:

So… I picked up a new sketchbook & ERASER today! (I haven’t really used an eraser all semester, yikes)

People, people:
So I’ve convinced two of my friends to get a website and blog running with their works. I’m going to help them out for the next few months and make sure it gets up! It’s pretty exciting seeing people around me with their blog updates and goals :)

Life:
Life feels like spring and it’s flowing into my drive to make art… It’s weird how appreciating and keeping things fresh daily makes you excited to wake up to walk out that door or nest inside in cozy PJs. Everyday feels like it’s a step forward towards another good day. Everything builds onto each other step by step as we flow through our weeks. Our skills, connections, knowledge are constantly growing… so if you look at it that way, everyday is valuable. We grow into better people not only for ourselves but people around us.

I randomly came up with the concept of “hope & dreams are useless without action” while doing dishes yesterday. I think I was also craving cheese… bloaty cakes.. cereal… and a third breakfast?

( I know, this kind of sounds cheesy and lame )

Nose Drawings

I have a fear of drawing faces.. particularly noses. So, I decided to practice drawing them in many variations. I think it helps when you think about them in terms of geometric shapes.

Sunday

It’s nearing the 2nd semester of 2nd year and I’m thinking… wow, I really need to push for experimenting around to reach a style by fourth year.

Sunday, sunday, sunday. I hosted the first “art in odd places” event.. (there shall be more in the spring!). We explored the empty UC building… it was interesting, but not as creepy as I thought it would be.

We found this drawing on the door that resembled my friend’s hair!! WEIRD.
