Being Experimental - Synesthesia (music&line)

May 30, 2009 :: Category - Music, Thoughts

Life Drawing Homework to Self:

1) Draw tension:
Observe the tension in the body (sitting down, standing up, throwing a ball)

2) Incorporate Movement:
Show movement with line

3) Draw Weight:
Using tone and line, communicate the sense of weight in the body

I’ll post them when I’m done :) ( I plan on going to Dr. Sketchy’s next week along with The Collective life drawing sessions.. )

Music Homework - Composing short pieces (~ 10 seconds)

1) Compose Tension
Use the right keys and tempo that can communicate this

2) Compose Movement
Think of different types of movements (running, flying) and execute their speed through tempo and type of movement through keys

3) Compose Weight:
Use an ever changing weight (such as the feeling of walking in a uniform path and suddenly falling -> where your sense of weight changes).

Crossing Senses… communicating physical senses in different forms - music & line :)

Thinking in terms of multiple instruments

May 23, 2009 :: Category - Thoughts

Thinking in terms of multiple instruments could be interesting. You don’t necessarily need to be a multi-instrumentalist, but if you can illustrate the sounds in your head using different instruments, it’s a start to composing more than just solos.

Potential of a electronic artist/DJ: They can think in terms of different “instruments.” If you look at it, synths, pads, bass, acoustics can all be compared to different “instruments” because they all produce different sounds. Now, apply that knowledge into classical instruments (or nonelectronic instruments) and you can compose a symphony much easily if you can think in terms of strings, pianos, harps, etc.

Problem: some electronic artists do not think too well in very melodic compositions (such as a pianist composer does), perhaps because of the nature of their music? However, they do come up with quiet strong simplistic keys that are catchy.

Comparisons: look at instruments very carefully. You can take a synth (most similar to strings) and add in effects such as stutters and tremolos. If you look at violins, you can also change the variation of the sound through similar means.

if I did not explore electronic music during my teenage years, I wouldn’t have been able to fuse strings and other instruments/sounds with piano! Exploring other sounds/instruments is great practice for exploring, similar to an artist trying different media.

Paris Update: Drawings - Place D’italie

May 13, 2009 :: Category - Sketches/Drawings

I was roaming Place D’italie (area between the Chinese and Italien areas of Paris) with my sister. We sat at the steps with the sun glaring at the side of our heads and drew… some random life doodles:

(Ink pen & gouche)

GOAL: Paint gestures of surrounding areas only! (I forgot water and had to settle with an ink pen :( )
